If you are a fan of really good UK shows you may cringe when you hear they are being remade. I for one usually do because they never seem to get it quite right. Well another UK favorite is getting a makeover by none other than MTV. The long running BBC favorite Skins is becoming Skins USA for the MTV network. I for one do not want a mash up of Jersey Shore and The Real World, and than have the name Skins USA slapped on it. SO far MTV has maintained they would like to keep the quality intact of the original Skins.
Skins USA will hit the airwaves of MTV in January, and from the early looks of things they seem to be playing it very safe. The very first episodes of Skins USA will mirror those of the UK version. If you are a fan of the original think of sex, trampolines, drugs? Ring a bell? If you have been following the UK version it should. However, how long MTV follows the path of the original Skins is unclear. I figure you will start to see more sex, more nudity, and more girls. I think the original complexity of Skins will get lost in the MTV style of Skins USA. Then there is the cast, which honestly doesn't make much sense. Skins USA will take place in Baltimore, Maryland. If you have ever been to Baltimore you know that it is a fairly African-American city. MTV doesn't even take this into account for the casting of Skins USA. You have a beautiful all white cast, which certainly does not do justice for what could have been an ethnically diverse cast. Almost all of the original characters from the UK version end up in Skins USA. There have been some name changes, and sex changes but you will easily recognize your favorites when Skins USA premiers. It will be interesting to see if an MTV audience will fall in love with this show. Will they find it's humor, romance and drama or will it turn into another shameless reality type program. If acted, produced and directed in the style of the original it could very well be a ground breaking show for MTV.
